The Tesla Model 3 Performance is an exceptional performing vehicle, it's fast, fun, and full of new tech. I took my Model 3 for a 2,000 mile road trip, and on that journey, all was going well. That is, until we hit a pothole. If you can believe it, a single pothole cost over $2,600 to fix, and required 7 hours of time from start to finish, leaving the Tesla service center.

While Tesla isn't to blame here, low profile tires are becoming the new trend, and they're not any good in my book. They're expensive, heavy, and cause ride quality to suffer, all for what some feel is improved aesthetics, and perhaps some slightly more responsive steering. But the Model 3 Performance only offers one wheel size, so tires with less than 2 inches between the wheel and the road are the only option. Do any of you have low profile tires? How has your experience been?

Thanks for watching everyone! Lots of pothole fans, this is great! I try not to have a negative vibe in my videos, but I think some frustration probably shined through in my tone on this one. Hope everyone is having a wonderful, pothole-free day!

You could have a machine shop re-weld the rim on both the inside and out. Otherwise, you could sell the rim pair on ebay or another platform stating the item is as-is with no warranty. I'm sure someone with the right skill set could repair it and re-sell!

I own the identical car as you so this video has made me seriously thinking about selling my 20" OEM rims. I already have a 19" set of Braelin BR10 alloys with winter performance rubber on them since I live in Ontario, Canada

I live in montreal and I challenge anyone to show me they have worse pot holes than we do. I had a 2004 mustang mach1 with 19 inch wheels and low pro tires on probably wider wheels and it being lighter weight, I guess that makes all the difference because I've hit many pot holes and never had a flat tire.

Also, if only the media would stop spreading lies and eggagerating issues with Tesla for the short sellers benefit then Tesla could grow more rapidly and achieve the same level of quality and support other manufacturers are at.

Fyi, you probably know this, but Google search "Tesla P3D-", you can purchase this car with the 18s, no spoiler, no suspension, but you get the speed increase. The inventory is limited, but there are some left.

Did you check with your insurance company, it is after all an accident. They can then more knowledgeably and effectively go after the State to get their money back.

Living in New England, pot holes are life. Last year I ruined 2 tires hitting large pot holes that were probably 4-6" deep (2 separate instances, in different areas). Both times it was at night and after a corner, so I barely even saw them. Seeing as I don't have low profile tires, they did their job and absorbed all the blow. Both times they ended up with a sidewall bubble the next day, but the wheels and suspension were fine.

XD a regular fullsize pickup truck has brakes sized to stop 7+ tons GCW .... and as small as 17" wheels with typically 7"+ of sidewall - they can hit infinity potholes at any speed without taking any damage whatsoever.

Wow. I drive a 2013 Audi S6 and I hit a pothole. It bent the wheel but did not damage tire or lose air. It played hell with the adaptive cruise control. So I needed a new wheel and an alignment, about $1200. I submitted it to the insurance company (with the paid bill for total repair) and they sent me a check for $4,900 (glad I didn't save 15% or more with Geico, lol). I called my insurance company to verify what they sent and they said it's our estimate so it's correct.
I had managed to hit the pothole only once. :) I agree with the profile statement. Mine are 255/35/20 I wish they were 255/40/20s. I believe the later models were larger in diameter with a 21" option.

                                          I thought Audi's were expensive.

I was coming home at night and was making a left turn onto a divided road with one of those grass medians wrapped by a curb. The edge of the curb that frames the intersection was disintegrating and there were chunks of concrete on the road. I noticed this too late and ended up trying to avoid it, but instead ran my vehicle up onto the curb and bulged 2 tires, bent 1 rim, and bent a control arm. You're not alone, mate.

When you need the car back though I can see how this wouldn’t be an option. Still though selling the 20’s and tyres should more than cover the cost of replacing with smaller.

One time I was leaving the lot of a pool with the windows down. I was in my 2007 Civic Si, It had 17" wheels and low profile Michelin tires. Right as I took off, two yellow jackets flew inside the car with me and started buzzing my face. Panicked, I started swatting frantically and ended up cutting the corner of one of the curbed islands in the lot. I hit with both right side tires, tearing the sidewall of both. As we all know, cars only come with one spare. No road side assistance for me, I had to use my jack and one from a family members car to lift the entire right side, take off both wheels, bum a ride to a local tire shop (30 minutes away), buy two used tires, have them mounted, take them back to the car, and put them back on. At least the wheels were okay still.
